REFUSE COLLECTION INFORMATION:

Refuse collection in South Park Township is subcontracted to a private company, County Hauling. All refuse is collected on Mondays and Thursdays designated by street and must be placed at the curb. When your collection day falls on or after a major weekday holiday (New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day), your service will be delayed one day during that week only. If a holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday, there will be no change in the collection schedule. Residents are advised to place their refuse at the curb, not on the street, after 6:00 p.m. on the evening preceding the collection day as refuse trucks cannot adhere to a specific time schedule in any neighborhood. The 2024 Trash & Recycling Calendar can be viewed here.

Large items such as appliances (Freon must be removed and a certification sticker applied verifying removal) and furniture will also be collected if they are placed at the curb (1 bulk item per house per week).. Lawn and garden trimmings must be placed in plastic bags. Tree limbs/small trees must be bundled in lengths of four feet or less, carpet must be rolled and tied in lengths not to exceed 48 inches.

Items that will NOT be collected include: Construction/building materials and automobile parts (including tires), household hazardous waste, electronic waste, stones and dirt, and appliances containing refrigerant/Freon. Special arrangements must be made with the waste hauler because of landfill restrictions.

A mailer from County Hauling has been sent out detailing complete guidelines on trash and recycling collection. Residents can view these guidelines here.

If you have any further questions on our Refuse Collection, please contact County Hauling at (724) 929-7694 or via e-mail info@countyhauling.com. You can also visit the County Hauling Website at www.countyhauling.com.

TRASH & RECYCLING REMINDER TO OUR RESIDENTS:

Residents are reminded that trash and recycling containers are to be placed at the curb after 6:00 p.m. the evening prior to their collection day. The reason is that trash and recycling collection activities are not scheduled according to a specific time in a specific neighborhood. This means that just because trash was collected at 9:00 a.m. for the past month, it will be collected at the same time going forward. Collection times may vary for a number of reasons. Please make every effort to place all containers at the curb the evening prior to collection day.

South Park Township will be hosting Environmental Days on the following Saturdays: April 13, 2024, and October 19, 2024, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Municipal Complex. Click on the links below for detailed information on each event:

REFRIGERANT/FREON REMOVAL: Due to provisions in the Federal Clean Air Act, collection or disposal of white goods (refrigerators, freezers, air-conditioners, dehumidifiers, and water coolers) is not permitted unless the Freon has been properly removed from the compressors. The Environmental Protection Agency also requires certification that the refrigerant has been recovered from the equipment prior to final disposal. The following company collects items containing Freon:

Appliance Warehouse, 20 S. 6th Street (rear), Pittsburgh, PA 15201

RECYCLING INFORMATION:
Under the Township’s recycling program, the following items can be recycled:

Paper- including newsprint and flattened cardboard and paperboard..

Cans - Aluminum and Bi-metal (no paints or chemicals).

Glass - Glass bottles and jars

Plastic - Type 1 & 2 Plastics including bottles, jugs, jars, and tubs. Plastic tub lids must be removed before the container can be recycled. Any other plastic shape must be disposed of in the trash.

Keep food and liquids out of your recycling receptacle. Make sure none of the recyclables are bagged, as plastic bags are NOT recyclable curbside. Check with local retailers for plastic bag recycling options. All recyclable items can be placed in one bin for collection.
County Hauling's Guide for Recycling can be found online here.

Recycling bins must be placed at the curb the night before the designated collection day. Recycling must be placed loose (clean and dry) in a bin clearly marked "Recycling." The bins are collected every other week each month, on Mondays and Thursdays designated by street. When a collection day falls on or after a major weekday holiday, (New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day), your service will be delayed one day during that week only. If a holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday, there will be no change in the collection schedule. The 2024 Trash and Recycling Calendar can be viewed here. The Township appreciates the residents’ cooperation in making this program successful. Recycling schedules are also available at the Township building.

If you have too many items, place the overflow in a similar container clearly marked "Recycling" or you can purchase an additional 32 gallon recycling bin at the Adminstration Sewage and Refuse Office at the Administrative Offices for $16.00. Lids for the 32 gallon recycling bins are also sold for $7.00/each at the Administration Sewage and Refuse Office. Recycling placed in plastic bags will not be collected.

Beginning in 2022, we are excited to announce the acceptance of plastic tubs in your curbside recycling program. Acceptable plastic tubs have a snap on lind and hold food such as yougurt, cottage cheese, cream cheese, and butter. Food must be removed before the container can be recycled.

Items that will NOT be collected include: no plastic bags of any kind; Styrofoam; diapers or clothing; food waste or yard waste; contaminated containers (pizza boxes, food wrappers). Items that cannot be recycled are to be disposed of in the trash.

Beginning in January 2013, due to the Pennsylvania Covered Device Recycling Act, Act 108 of 2010, residents will no longer be allowed to place televisions, computers, and electronic equipment at the curb for pick-up with municipal waste. These items are required to be correctly disposed at a recycling event or facility. For more information and locations of recycling events throughout Allegheny County, please visit the Pennsylvania Resources Council at www.prc.org or call the South Park Township Administration Office at (412) 831-7000.

SEWER RENTAL

GO PAPERLESS AND PAY YOUR SEWAGE AND REFUSE BILL ONLINE HERE

Residential sewer rental charges are based on actual water consumption at $6.50 per 1,000 gallons. There is also a $15.00 quarterly service charge. Refuse and sewer rental charges appear on one bill and are sent out on a quarterly basis. Bills are sent out during the months of March, June, September and December. The sewer/refuse billing clerk, Michele Schwerer, can be contacted at 412-831-7000.

PREVENT SANITARY SEWER LINES FROM BEING OBSTRUCTED

PLEASE DO NOT introduce wipes, paper towels, and other materials into the Township's sanitary sewer system. Residents are asked to discard the materials in the trash rather then flushing them, placing the items in the basement floor drain, or in manholes. Continuing these practices may cause expensive sanitary sewer back-ups not only in your home, but in your neighbors's home as well. Residents are to contact South Park Township at 412-831-7000 with any questions or if they notice sewage smells or manhole problems.
